Rockley Still 1986 26yo Sherry Finish (Bristol Spirits)

Rockley Still 1986 26yo Sherry Finish (Bristol Spirits)

Once I started talking to the bartender about rums he pulled out this one and said he wished more people ordered it, because he thought it was brilliant. Good sales move, and the sucker I am, I bought a pour.

This rum is produced on the Rockley Still in 1986, after which it was moved to the UK at an undisclosed point in time and aged further. It was then finished in Oloroso sherry casks.

Distiller: Rockley Estate
Bottled By: Bristol Spirits
ABV: 46%
Age: 26yo
Cask type: Undisclosed, Oloroso Sherry Finish
Source: Pour at Grand Terminus, Bergen, Norway.
Setting: Unblind.

Nose: Raisin, christmas cake, asphalt, cheap dried fig (sulphured), demerara sugar
Palate: A whole lot of sherry. Raisin and sulphured fig notes again. Jammy.
Finish: Raisin/sultana, quince jam. Cloying but not all that sweet, jammy is the best way I can describe it.
Overall: This was a pretty interesting experience, overall I think it has too much of that jammy note for me to really love it. This was a super fruit-forward rum to me and not something I’ve really experienced before. I drank this beside the Caroni I reviewed previously, and ended up preferring drinking the Caroni, but thinking this was a better rum. It strikes me as an acquired taste—two or three pours of this and you’d find yourself coming back over and over again.
