Eagle Rare 10 (Mikkeller Select)

Eagle Rare 10 (Mikkeller Select)

This has been one of my favourite bottles to slowly sip on. I’ve never had regular (non-select) Eagle Rare, it’s not sold in Norway. But I really like this bottle. If regular ER was sold here, I’d have picked it up in an instant. I have heard they’re going to stop with the single barrel selects on ER and that’s a damn shame. I will have to pick up more of this if I can. For once, something where living in Europe is an advantage - this is the single barrel select by Danish brewer Mikkeller. As far as I know it’s only available at their copenhagen stores (and of course their bars around the world, but not to take home).

Source: Own bottle.
Price: 299DKK (iirc)/47 USD (375ml bottle) from Mikkeller & Friends Bottleshop, Torvehallene Copenhagen
Setup: Blind in a trio tasting with Booker's 2017-01 & Bulleit Bourbon
Drank: Neat, in a Glencairn. Rested 15 minutes.

Nose: Dried old herbs, dill seed. Medium acetic character. Deeper notes of seasoned oak and brown sugar.
Palate: Medium mouthfeel, no tannins or noticable spice, briny.
Finish: Not the longest finish. Dried oregano, clove and ends on a pithy note of mandarin rind.
Overall: Delicious, but missing some complexity and mouthfeel. The notes I _am_ getting are very enjoyable.
Blind guess: Buffalo Trace

Rating (given blind): 5

Thoughts: Wow, I thought this would do better! Up until now I’ve been super lucky that my blind tasting notes have lined up with my normal view of those bourbons. This was bound to happen eventually! It was just missing something special, and I guessed it was a base-level bourbon. This probably shouldn’t be super surprising to me. Either way, I did still enjoy it quite a bit.
