Barterhouse 20yo (Orphan Barrel)

Barterhouse 20yo (Orphan Barrel)

Althought often reasonably priced in the US, here in Australia it seems to have been priced pretty high, going for $365 USD (which also happens to be right around the RRP of BTAC here). Not a cheap pour, but Orphan Barrel stuff seems divisive and it’s definitely on my list of things to try.

Source: Poured at The Gresham, Brisbane, Australia.
Setup: Unblind
Drank: Neat, in a Glencairn-style stemmed glass. Rested 5-10 minutes.

Nose: Flowery, sourdough with an acetone note. Wet wood.
Palate: Pretty thin. Smooth. Green plants & thyme.
Finish: Oak tannins, orange pith, vinegar, mandarin.
Overall: A little acetone forward, the age only really shows itself in the astringency.

Rating: 5

Thoughts: The age really didn’t show itself to me in the way that a few of the previous older bourbons I tasted did. Surprising, since it’s in fact 20 years old. This is a solid bourbon, but that’s all it is. I wouldn’t go out of my way to find it, nor would I spend $365 on it.
