Noah's Mill

Noah's Mill

Source: Sample from Master of Malt.
Setup: Blind in a trio tasting with Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye 7yo & Elijah Craig 12yo
Drank: Neat, in a Glencairn. Rested 15 minutes.

Nose: Creamed sugar, ripe cherries, wheat bran. Dusty. Rising bread dough, sweet cookies. Apricot.
Palate: Hot & spicy, tastes youngish. Bready malt candy.
Finish: Finish of HFCS candy (jolly ranchers?), wheat. Could be longer. Yellow apple, white sugar.
Blind Guess: Has to be something wheated.
Overall: Really grain forward on the nose. Hot and young on the palate. Too gristy for my taste.

Rating (given blind): 4

Thoughts: (Thoughts written under the assumption that I had drunk a wheated bourbon) At least I’m consistent! I do think that I misinterpreted the high proof has youngness a bit, though. I haven’t super liked any of the wheaters I’ve tried. But I will keep trying! Although I will say, I had a pour of Pappy 20 unblind at a bar a couple of months ago (didn’t do a writeup) and I did really like that. The wheat note was faintly identifiable, but it had fallen far into the background and augmented the oak tannins favourably. So it’s not impossible!
