Opthimus 25y Solera Tomatin Finish

Opthimus 25y Solera Tomatin Finish

Opthimus is a line of Solera-style rums from distiller Oliver & Oliver in the Dominican Republic. This particular bottling is a solera with a maximum component age of 25 years, which has been finished on Tomatin casks. The importer at the tasting I had this at seemed to indicate this was a large proportion (if not all) Brugal rum, but I can’t verify that information (nor find any information about the relationship between Oliver & Oliver and Brugal. Perhaps he was mistaken). It is bottled at a barely acceptable 43%, backsweetened with 34g/L sugar, and likely coloured.

Distiller: Undisclosed
Producer: Oliver & Oliver
ABV: 43%
Sugar: 34g/L
Age: at most 25 years
Cask type: Bourbon, Spanish ex-Tempranillo, ex-Tomatin finish
Source: Pour at Statsraaden Bar, Bergen, Norway
Setting: Unblind

Nose: Birch wood, perfume, coconut, musty basement, cola.
Palate: Licorice, cinnamon, molasses. Sweet.
Finish: Mint, cinnamon, chocolate. Sweetness builds and lingers.
Overall: This is about as much as I can enjoy a backsweetened rum. It had some interesting notes that I could appreciate and enjoy, and the sweetness, despite the overwhelming 34g/L and low proof, was not overwhelming. I am actually really surprised how much I liked this given the low proof and sugar content. Makes me wonder how much I would have liked it if it was bottled purely.
