Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7yo

Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7yo

I’ve heard only good things about Old Scout, so I was excited to this one. I really don’t know that much about it other than that they’re a newer Craft distillery, and they source their base from MGP. So lets see what I thought blind:

Source: Sample from Master of Malt.
Setup: Blind in a trio tasting with Willett Pot Still Reserve & Sazerac.
Drank: Neat, in a Glencairn. Rested 15 minutes.

Nose: Deep oak, molasses, dusty leather, old books. Rich nose.
Palate: Smooth, milky mouthfeel with notes of golden syrup and not much spice.
Finish: Reasonably persistent finish with sweet oak, mulch and acetone.
Overall: Deep and dusty molasses on the nose is delicious, I am guessing there is a few years on this one? Really enjoyable.
Blind guess: Blanton’s Gold

Rating (given blind): 6

Thoughts: Wow, what a super nice bourbon. I really wish I could buy a bottle of this, but it’s unfortunately not available anywhere I have access too. Easy drinking, and really solid, with deep woody complexity. I guess I can’t recognize MGP yet, but if this is typical of MGP sourced, then it sure is nothing to be ashamed of.
