Wemyss Treacle Chest

Wemyss Treacle Chest

Treace Chest is a NAS blended malt in Wemyss’s new “Family Collection”. It is reportedly a blend of two Highland malts, aged in an undisclosed mix of first fill Sherry hogsheads, and proofed down to 46%.

I tasted this blind, beside two of their other NAS bottlings, so I was not affected by their suggesting the flavour in the name (all I knew at the time of pouring was that this was bottled by Wemyss).

This is my third in a series of 6 reviews of Wemyss products.

Distiller: Two undisclosed Highland distilleries
Distilled: Undisclosed
Bottled: Undisclosed
ABV: 46%
Age: NAS
Cask type: Undisclosed mix of first-fill sherry hogsheads
Source: Pour at Grand Terminus, Bergen, Norway.
Setting: Blind.

Nose: Red grape, sherry, white pepper, caramel toffee, oak, some rubber. This is oddly rummy in a way, it makes me think of the Zinfandel finished Foursquare.
Palate: Lighter body, but it coats the mouth. Otherwise it fell a little flat here, just a dull spiciness.
Finish: Finishes short on a bitter raisin note.
Overall: The node made promises the body couldn’t keep, unfortunately. If it were able to, I would have been interested in buying a bottle.
Rank: 5
Reveal: No surprises that this was sherry finished, that was pretty obvious. This one actually tasted its proof, unlike the first two. In comparison to Vanilla Burst, this overpromised and underdelivered. Vanilla Burst was a sleeper on the nose, you weren’t expecting the amount of complexity and interestingness that came with the palate. In that way, I preferred VB.
