Wemyss Continental Platter (20yo Clynelish)

Continental Platter is a Wemyss single barrel bottling a Clynelish whisky. It was distilled in 1997 and aged for 20 years in a single hogshead before being proofed down to 46% and bottled in 2017, yielding 277 bottles.

This was tasted partially blind with another Clynelish bottling, their names (which are rather palate-influencing) were not revealed until after these notes were written.

This is my fourth in a series of 6 reviews of Wemyss products.

Setting: Unblind.

Nose: Very light and pretty. Moss, gingerbread, waffles and pine. Unassuming.
Palate: Woah, I didn’t expect this from the nose. Huge palate, gingerbread, waxy custard, a light smoky note, and some alcohol heat.
Finish: Chocolate cake and stewed yellow fruit, almost an umami note, is this the same whisky I just smelled? Lasts for a very long time.
Overall: The unassuming nose in no way prepares you for how great this is on the palate. Some whiskies you can nose for days, but this is one you want on your palate for days. Luckily, it tends to stick around for a good long while on each sip. I actually got no indication of the age though, for better or worse.
