Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Rum

Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Rum

Pusser’s is a classic “Navy Style” rum. Traditionally that means it’s a blend of rums from Carribean British colonies (now former colonies), at over “Gunpowder Proof” (57%).
Pusser’s itself is in fact bottled at 54.5% despite being named after the “gunpowder” test which it would fail—a bit strange that.
This bottle is a slightly older bottling from before they switched to the “Product of Guyana” label, and is marked as “Product of Barbados”.
It includes components from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Guyana.
Particularly interesting is the Guyanan component which is distilled by Demerara Distillers Limited in the world’s only wooden pot stills. Super cool.

Nose: Black pepper, licorice, brown cheese (brunost), caramelized orange, clove
Palate: Mildly hot, meaty, umami. Candied apple.
Finish: Mandarin marmalade, citrus creme brulee, brown cheese again, mildly astringent, dark chocolate, some bitterness.
Overall: Like a funky chocolate orange. I really loved this rum. No cloying sweetness, a good full body, and oozing with complexity on the nose. For the rather cheap price of this rum, it should be a no brainer to keep on any shelf.
