A single cask, cask strength, unfiltered and uncoloured bottling of 14 year old MacDuff distilled in 2003 by Single Cask Nation.

This is a series of blind tastings from the “The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar 5th Edition” advent calendar. I do not know what is in the calendar, so every one of these reviews is 100% no prior knowledge.

Nose: Salty caramel, vanilla butterscotch icecream, a mild smoke thread, clove, pistachio and clementine. Some alcohol presence. Really interesting complex nose!
Palate: Smoke, brine, heat, seaweed, apricot, moath coating and pretty hot. Where did that smoke come from?!
Finish: The briney smoke fades into a vanilla pistachio nuttiness, with citrusy clementine overtones. Delightful.
Overall: This was a good pour: hot, feisty and delicious. The nose was full of interesting nuts and spicyness, then the palate punches you with a gigantic hit of smoke and brine. Great stuff.
Rank: 7
Reveal: Wow! I’m not sure I’ve ever had a MacDuff, so it’s not surprising I couldn’t guess it. 57%, no wonder it tasted a little hot! This was really delicious, a fantastic introduction to the distillery.
