Cane Island Cuba Rum

Today we have another in the series of Cane Island blends which hasn’t been doing fantastically well in this series. This one is a blend of undisclosed cuban distilleries, ranging from 3 to 5 years of age, and bottled an unfortunate 40%.

Today is also my transition from the European to Australian timezone for Christmas (I’m writing this up from half-way in between, so this is also contingent on my luggage actually making it), so the days may get a little mixed up from here on out.

This is a series of blind tastings from the “24 Rums” advent calendar. I have not looked at what is in the calendar, so every one of these reviews is 100% no prior knowledge.

Nose: Cinnamon, nutmeg, spicy oak, raisin, vanilla, deep brown sugar, some overripe fruit funk. Now we’re talking! Oak forward and inviting.
Palate: Sultanas, nutmeg and brown sugar lead the way, this took a right turn and went christmas cake where I thought it was going to go oak bomb. Seems to be a little sweetened, if I am not mistaken.
Finish: Christmas cake, brown sugar and mildly tannic. Medium length.
Overall: This was certainly head and shoulders better than many of the rums in this calendar. Assertive oak, lots of dried fruits and an appreciable molasses character. I wish it was a little drier and a little higher proof, but all in all this was good stuff.

Reveal: I was getting worried for the Cane Island bottlings after the previous two, but this shows promise where the other two didn’t.
