Old New Orleans Amber Rum

Old New Orleans Amber Rum

Today’s rum comes from Louisiana, from Old New Orleans Distillery. Somewhat unsurprisingly this rum is aged in ex-Bourbon barrels, and is apparently between 3 and 7 years old. Unfortunately they have watered it down to 40%.

This is a series of blind tastings from the “24 Rums” advent calendar. I have not looked at what is in the calendar, so every one of these reviews is 100% no prior knowledge.

Nose: Rich, buttery applejack, sultana, white grape, clear rubbery funk. Some background vanilla and oak notes.
Palate: Round and rich, white grape flesh, stone fruit, golden syrup.
Finish: A little kick of sweetness trails notes of lychee and grape.
Overall: Quite an interesting one this, fruity notes abound on both the nose and the palate, with a good kick of funk. I would have liked a little more heat and oak, but this was definitely enjoyable. On a run of good ones now, it seems!
Rank: 6
Reveal: Particularly the funk character was interesting to see coming from a US craft distiller, and unexpected. Cool.
