Zuidam Flying Dutchman Dark Rum No. 3

Zuidam Flying Dutchman Dark Rum No. 3

Zuidam is a Dutch distiller, and this is their “Flying Dutchman Dark Rum No. 3”, a rum that is aged for at least 3 years in a blend of Oloroso, PX and virgin American oak casks. This masterful achievement is then crowned with a watering-down to 40% and backsweetening.

This is a series of blind tastings from the “24 Rums” advent calendar. I have not looked at what is in the calendar, so every one of these reviews is 100% no prior knowledge.

Age: 3yo
Cask type: Blend of PX, Oloroso & virgin American oak

Setting: Blind

Nose: Honeycomb, linen, fresh bread, floral perfume, pineapple, caramel. Little barrel or molasses influence here.
Palate: Light, mildly sweet, candy-like foral honeycomb, bready.

Finish: Long, sugary, honied finish. Tastes like it has been sweetened with honey, and it all comes out here on the finish.
Overall: This one was out of left field. To me it smells and tastes little like rum, and reminisces more of an oak-aged honey liqueur. An agricole, perhaps?
