Whisper Antigua Gold Rum

Whisper Antigua Gold Rum

Whisper is a relatively new rum created by a couple of french entrepreneurs living in Antigua. They sourced their distillate from Antigua Distillery, and aged it in ex-bourbon barrels for a couple of years. It was first released in 2015. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of information floating around about this one that isn’t in french (and I don’t speak french), so most of this was sourced from The Lone Caner’s fantastic writeup.

They are clearly not colouring their rum, and from what I tasted this has no added sugar. I wish they would bottle a little higher proof, but the product is very good for 40%, and they have my respect for not backsweetening, colouring, or generally bullshitting.

This is a series of blind tastings from the “24 Rums” advent calendar. I have not looked at what is in the calendar, so every one of these reviews is 100% no prior knowledge.

Age: Undisclosed
Cask type: ex-Bourbon

Setting: Blind

Nose: Raw sugarcane, cornflakes, rich vanilla oakiness, pine bark, sweetness. Some tropical peach and mango notes.
Palate: Light, golden syrup, coconut, dried fruits.
Finish: Ends with fruity notes of dried mango, apricot and golden syrup. Medium length.
Overall: A very enjoyable, straight forward english style rum. Not particularly funky, some clear oak presence, and some fruity complexity to search out. It tastes like it’s around 40%, which is one thing it could definitely have improved on—but if it is 40%, it is regardless very good for the proof.
